Herr Neas said on Nov 16 @ 5:00pm one question--how many tries?
Ill_Literate said on Nov 16 @ 5:02pm nice action shot...very 'little mermaid'
brian_l_cummings said on Nov 16 @ 5:04pm in the thumbnail on the main page it looked like you were being attacked by bees or something!
Kerok said on Nov 16 @ 5:04pm Nice shot.
Finn MacCool said on Nov 16 @ 5:06pm I also thought bees. Holy crap that is an awesome picture.
meatee.t.j. said on Nov 16 @ 5:11pm when i first saw the thumbnail, it reminded me of a Bjork music video where she's covered in piercings that are linked together by chains. I forget which song that is, but that's what came to mind nonetheless. I am glad to see its just water and not piercings though.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 5:14pm Herr Neas: Five tries for that one. First I was trying to do one under water, and that never worked out.

Thanks, everyone.
Ill_Literate said on Nov 16 @ 5:14pm speaking of bees, this picture is the bee's knees.

the BEE'S KNEES.
Herr Neas said on Nov 16 @ 5:30pm it came out great. big up
Kaitlin said on Nov 16 @ 5:44pm Won't someone give this guy an MVB??? :)
Geezer said on Nov 16 @ 5:47pm Nice shot. Hope the kids aren't making fun. The beard looks topnotch.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 5:48pm Actually, the kids aren't. My youngest periodically asks me why I have it, and every once in a while during story time she'll start pulling at the hairs, but usually in a pretty gentle way.
RyanHale said on Nov 16 @ 5:53pm incredible!
T-Hog said on Nov 16 @ 5:55pm nicey nice
Mason Poe said on Nov 16 @ 7:28pm 5* your best shot yet. also: welcome to the shirtless club.
Patrick said on Nov 16 @ 7:33pm Your camera is fast!
Trisha said on Nov 16 @ 7:42pm You have a nice bathroom.
General Lee said on Nov 16 @ 8:43pm (Maybe he's right. Maybe there is something the matter with me.
I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad.)

Look at this stuff
Isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl
The girl who has everything?
Look at this trove
Treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Looking around here you think
Sure, she's got everything
I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
You want thingamabobs?
I've got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more

I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see them dancin'
Walking around on those - what do you call 'em?
Oh - feet!

Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumping, dancing
Strolling along down a - what's that word again?
Street

Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free - wish I could be
Part of that world

What would I give if I could live out of these waters?
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand?
Bet'cha on land they understand
That they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women sick of swimmin'
Ready to stand

I'm ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
What's a fire and why does it - what's the word?
Burn?

When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love, love to explore that shore up above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world
C Dub said on Nov 16 @ 9:35pm you're gonna wash that red right outta your hair.
C Dub said on Nov 16 @ 10:00pm were you looking at my flickr page when you got inspired for this shot?
C Dub said on Nov 16 @ 10:01pm click the name
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 10:02pm Meatee: Did a little googling, and I think you mean the video for "Pagan Poetry." Click my name for a page on the making of the video.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 10:04pm Oh, that's a great shot at the botanical gardens C Dub! They've got some cool fountains there--got some pretty nice shots with the girls right around Halloween over there.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 10:05pm Oops, hit publish too soon. But unfortunately, I have not been perusing your Flickr page. I'm gonna go look through your pics right now though.

And the red is washing out fast. I'm gonna have to re-dye it soon. It was green last spring and I'm really missing that. I changed to red because they told me it wouldn't fade as fast, but they lied.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 10:08pm And General Lee: Thanks for the lyrics, man. Makes me wanna rush out and rent the movie, because it's not like I have to watch enough of the Disney Princess series these days with a 5 and a 3 year old in the house.

But I do love the you kept that parenthetical line at the start there, very fitting.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 10:10pm Trisha: Thanks, and this photo doesn't even show the chandelier. Click my name for one that does.
Justie Just said on Nov 16 @ 10:10pm I highly recommend that people who hate Disney's The Little Mermaid read some of the wrote versions of the fairy tale.. very different and desperately deppressing story.
Scrivener said on Nov 16 @ 10:19pm Oh yeah, you're right Justie. Hans Anderssen's (sp?) version is very, very different.
Justie Just said on Nov 16 @ 10:42pm There's a great book full of annoted Fairy Tales with selections from the Grimm's, Andersons, and a few other sources... very very interesting stuff.
General Lee said on Nov 16 @ 10:54pm justie, send me a link of said book. that sounds pretty interesting.
meatee.t.j. said on Nov 16 @ 11:40pm yeah, that's the one. i have the "Bjork: Volumen" DVD and that video is on there. i haven't watched the DVD in a while, but your photo inspired me to pop it in. man i love the videos by michel gondry, brilliant stuff.
Scrivener said on Nov 17 @ 4:30am Justie & Lee: If you're looking for something just a little more scholarly, there's a fantastic book called _The Great Cat Massacre And Other Episodes in French Cultural History_ by Robert Darnton that includes a chapter comparing French, German, and British fairy tales. It won't talk about Little Mermaid, but it's a very interesting argument Darnton develops about how the three countries develop different kinds of fairy tales and along the way he includes a whole bunch of very short retellings of fairy tales that I, at least, had never read before.

Click my name for the Amazon link.
Scrivener said on Nov 17 @ 4:33am Oh, yeah, and if you want a good book analyzing fairy tales (mostly from a psychoanalytic perspective), you should check out Bruno Bettelheim's _The Uses of Enchantment_.
Scrivener said on Nov 17 @ 4:34am Click on my name for Bettelheim link.
Woman Without a Beard said on Nov 17 @ 4:55am The naked Scrivener photo! This might be the best one yet.
esme said on Nov 17 @ 6:48am there's not enough nudity on here for my liking ;D

I had never really grown a beard before this contest, and I discovered over the four months that it wasn't really about growing a beard at all. I've never been around a group of guys who were so creative, cool, supportive, smart, and just all around fun to be with. Thank you all for this fantastic experience.
